Building linguistic proficiency in Khmer, French, and Mandarin

We believe that language is central to all learning, therefore, all teachers are language teachers who strive to promote and foster ways to communicate. We recognize the importance of home language (mother tongue) in the learning process. The aim is for all students to achieve the benefits of multilingualism, which values all languages and cultures and affirms the identity of each learner.

Our language programs help foster the IB learner profile attribute of being communicators. Students are encouraged to express themselves confidently and creatively in more than one language, developing the ability to collaborate effectively. Through exposure to diverse languages and cultures, students learn to appreciate different perspectives and approaches. This openness prepares them to be inquirers who seek out and evaluate a range of information sources.

LANGUAGE CLASSES

Students in Senior Kindergarten to Grade 9 take several language classes per week in their choice of Khmer, Mandarin, or French. Language study is optional from Grade 10 onwards. Students studying Khmer take the lead in our annual Khmer New Year celebration. Students may also join the after-school Khmer Club for additional language and cultural enrichment.

Students studying Khmer in Grades 10–12 may enrol in our credit-earning Khmer language and culture course. The course is accredited by the Ministry of Education of the province of Alberta, Canada. It promotes a depth of understanding of Khmer language, culture, and history through a structured curriculum. Students can earn up to 15 credits toward an Alberta High School Diploma and will be prepared to continue their study of Khmer language and culture at the university level.

BILINGUAL PROGRAMS

Students in Senior Kindergarten to Grade 6 may apply to enrol in either the French Bilingual Program or the Mandarin Bilingual Program at the beginning of each school year. Students study the Alberta (Canadian) curriculum in either Mandarin or French for approximately 35% of the school day. They acquire skills in speaking, reading, writing, listening, and communicating in French or Mandarin. Through the bilingual programs, students contribute to our Lunar New Year celebration and Francophonie Week.

Spaces in both bilingual programs are limited. Language assessments are required for students applying for entry in Grades 2–6. Acceptance is not guaranteed. The bilingual programs are a complimentary offering included in tuition fees.
