Preschool to Grade Twelve

CIS bridges together our three school campuses in order to provide a seamless journey from preschool through to grade twelve for all of our students. As Phnom Penh rapidly becomes an international city, it is clear that one important component needs to be part of it—strong international schools for children to study in English and to have the best education possible. CIS will fulfill that mission. The goal of the school is to provide a diverse student body with an exceptional education, instilling in young people a love for learning, the ability to think independently, and the confidence to pursue their dreams and goals.

Canadian Curriculum

CIS provides a Canadian curriculum in English. CIS is certified by Canada through the Canadian province of Alberta.

Canada’s education system is internationally recognized and has a very strong global presence. Canada consistently ranks in the top 10 countries in the world for education by the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Find out more about Canada, Alberta, and PISA here

As part of our accreditation, CIS is regulated by an Alberta government-appointed agency who visits our school and provide professional development and curriculum support to us. We also participate in standardized testing from Canada to ensure a quality standard of education.

Preschool

In the very early stages (18 months to 3 years), CIS preschool will offer a Canadian approach to learning that instills a strong sense of self and a confident attitude toward learning. We will gradually add elements of the Canadian Curriculum that support young children learning and give them the tools to move forward. This curriculum is based on current brain research and is built to develop the whole child, emotionally, physically, academically, and socially. We will integrate visual arts, music arts, drama, dance, and sports to give the child a well rounded education, and an opportunity to shine.

Teaching and learning at the Canadian International School of Phnom Penh preschool is an awesome experience for all! The school deliberately maintains a manageable low student to adult ratio, so that students can be given special care and attention. CIS believes in family values and it is very much a “family” atmosphere at the school. CIS offers a plethora of activities to enrich and support the “Whole Child” concept.

All Teachers at CIS are certified teachers and are predominantly from Canada, UK, US, New Zealand, Australia, and hold teaching degrees (or equivalent post graduate qualifications) from internationally recognized universities. In addition to this, many of our teachers either hold or are working towards gaining their Masters of Education.

Our Certified Canadian curriculum is recognized throughout the world and is portable to any country globally.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is a wonderful way for your child to discover what school is like and to have fun while learning new things. In this exciting new community, children’s natural curiosity and eagerness to learn are structured through organized activities and purposeful play. Your child will interact, imagine, experiment and explore to add to their knowledge, learn new skills and practise what they’ve learned.

Grade 1 and 2

Grade 1 and 2 are the start of an exciting journey. All Grade 1 and 2 students at CIS take nine required subjects: Art, English Language Arts, Foreign Language (one of French, Khmer or Mandarin), Health and Life Skills, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Science and Social Studies.

Grade 3 to 5

GRADES 6 to 10

As a middle school, our lower secondary team works hard to develop a sense of community and learning where adolescents can thrive and find a sense of belonging.

Students will study these core subjects all year:

  • Mathematics
  • English Language Arts
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Language Option (Mandarin, Khmer, French, English as a second language (ELL))

Students will have two option courses per semester:

  • Drama
  • Music
  • Art
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

ELL – English Language Learners

CIS offers a strong English Language Learners (ELL) program grounded in solid language acquisition research. The program aims to develop and improve on the English language skills necessary in order to ensure students are successful and properly supported here at CIS. The students eligible for the program are identified during the student application and interview process.  In addition to this program, all students will be immersed in English throughout the day, and this will lead to acquiring the English skills necessary to succeed in their other classes.

Environmental and Social Responsibility

CIS is a school that promotes environmental and social responsibility through activities and through learning about the community and the world beyond themselves. As the children mature, students and parents may be expected to participate in programs and fund raising to create a sense, among the students, that there are children who are not so fortunate as they are, outside the walls of our school.

Technology

CIS believes that children of this generation will need to know how to use technology effectively and in a balanced curriculum. It is important for children to be able to use technology without allowing it to engulf them. We will use interactive white board technology and iPad technology, where appropriate, to foster this growth and awareness. Teachers and students will be able to interact with websites and lessons in an exciting learning atmosphere. Students and teachers at CIS are truly fortunate to have such cutting edge technology at their disposal.
